What is Autoimmune Disease?

Normally our immune system produces proteins called antibodies that protect the body from  invaders. Autoimmune means your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and your body’s healthy tissues.  In an autoimmune disease the immune system is overactive and creates auto-antibodies that attack and destroy healthy tissue. This process can lead  to inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body.

There are more than 100 various types of autoimmune diseases. An autoimmune disease can range from mild to life threatening and can be debilitating. Studies show that almost 50 million Americans are affected by an autoimmune disease and up to 75 million have been undiagnosed. It is becoming an epidemic in our society and our mission is to help patients and their families live a fit and healthy lifestyle while dealing with their illness.
